THE HON. CHIEF JUSTICE JAMES ALLSOP AO, –– CHIEF JUSTICE FEDERAL COURT OF AUSTRALIA

Examine the business of shipping, ownership and deployment of ships, chartering and use of ships, carriage of goods by sea and limitation of liability.

ABOUT THE LECTURERS:

The Hon. Chief Justice James Allsop (BA 1974, LLB 1980) practised at the Bar in New South Wales from 1981-2000, mainly in commercial law, including insurance and shipping. Appointed SC in 1994 and QC in 1998, he served as a Judge of the Federal Court of Australia from 2001-2008. He was appointed President of the New South Wales Court of Appeal in June 2008 and served in that role until February 2013. On 1 March 2013 he was appointed Chief Justice of the Federal Court of Australia. From 1981 he taught part-time at the University of Sydney as a tutor and lecturer in property, equity, bankruptcy, insolvency, corporate finance and maritime law. From 2005-2009, he was a member of the board of the World Maritime University in Malmo, Sweden.

CONTENT The following topics will be studied with particular consideration of the international character of the commercial relationships involved and the importance of private and international law considerations: 1.

PETER MCQUEEN ARBITRATOR AND MEDIATOR Peter McQueen (BA 1971, LLB 1974) is a qualified arbitrator and an accredited mediator. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, an ICC and LMAA arbitrator and a member of ACICA, HKIAC, SIAC and SCMA panels of arbitrators. He is a Fellow and Director of ACICA and is the inaugural Chair of AMTAC. Previously, Mr. McQueen practiced internationally for over 30 years as a trade and transport lawyer advising transport operators, traders and service providers and their insurers and representing them in court, arbitration and mediation proceedings. He lectures in international commercial arbitration and maritime law at Aix Marseille University and the University of Sydney. DREW JAMES, CONSULTANT, AUS SHIP P&I, SYDNEY Drew James (BCom 1982, LLB 1982, LLM 1999) is a qualified arbitrator and has over 30 years experience as a maritime lawyer in a wide range of matters including the arrest and release of ships, carriage of goods by sea, marine insurance, charterparties, international trade, ship construction, general average, collisions, oil spill prosecutions and dock damage claims. He lectures in maritime law at the University of Sydney.

NON-AWARD ENROLMENT You can enrol in this subject on a non-award basis if you do not wish to commit to a Masters or Graduate Diploma. You can continue to add units via this method, and provided you meet the relevant requirements and complete the assessment you can also qualify for a Graduate Diploma or Masters if you so wish.

ASSESSMENT –– 1 x 2 ½ Hour Exam (60%) –– 1 x 3,500 Word Essay (40%)

SINGLE UNIT ENROLMENT You can enrol in this unit on a single unit or seminar basis where you can attend classes but you do not have to complete the assessment.
